Genre picture task

Genre

Films each fall into a genre category which shows what type of film it is. In a shop, for example HMV would organize their films into the different genres. Genre is all about the audience's expectations. If the film does not live up to the audiences expectations then they will be disappointed and the film will not be a success.

Horror:
This is a photograph we took to represent a horror genre. We used low key lighting (the light is coming from behind). This photo went well because we made it look scary. The darkness of the picture make it look eerie/creepy. The character is dressed all in black and has her hood up which gives a sense of mystery and suspense.
The photo looks creepy because it looks like the girl is hiding because you can only see half of her body and face. But it could also show that she watching whoever she may be following.  Her eyes look really dark giving her a look of evil. This is also due to the only light shining on her is from above/behind her. The camera shot was taken in the mirror so you are able to see the reflection of the girl and the audience can identify that it was taken in a toilet.
Romantic-comedy:
This photo went well because we made it brighter to make the colours more vibrant. This is high-key lighting which is often used for romantic comedies. This photo represents love because the two characters are holding hands which is an affectionate gesture. This romance is expected by the audience for this type of film.
The background of luscious leaves and flowers makes the photo look happy due to the bright colours. The fresh plant-life could also represent that they are a modern, young couple. The photo was taken at a close angle which can show that the two characters have a close relationship.

Action:
This photo went well because it expresses an action film well. The action of crawling under cars makes it look like the character is on a mission, for example trying to get somewhere without being seen. There is not much to be seen in the photo, the black underneath of the car and the groud take up most of it. This represents a sense of mystery or tension because the audience do not know what to expect. This photo uses low key lighting- there is a clear contrast between the dark and tight tones and there is no light coming from in front or above. The character is wearing a simple hoodie which makes her look young of just like an ordinary person and the action related to this film is not to do with her job. It shows that she could have been caught up in something which is what makes the storyline unexpected.

Comedy:
This photo was not as successful because it does not represent a comedy well enough. We used high key lighting to show make the colours look brighter and stand out which gives the photo a sense of happiness and humour. It looks as if the character is trying to climb a fence into an area where she shouldn't go. She has an expression of laughter and confusion which makes it look like something in the film could go horribly wrong as she does not know what she is doing. The dominance of the bright yellow colour gives the photo an eye-catching appearance which will attract people to the film.

Science-Fiction:
This photograph is appropriate for a sci-fi film because it looks slightly strange and could relate to something to do with aliens or futuristic. The photo is of a human eye which has been edited to make it look as if there are two iris' in one. This relates to an alien film because aliens are often thought to only have one eye. High-key lighting has been used- there is light coming from above which can be seen from the light bouncing off the eye. Low-key lighting has also been used- a dark sillouhette can be seen reflecting in the eye which gives the photo a sense of mystery.
